What do those Green Words Mean?

  • Sustainable:  1. Capable of being sustained. 2. A method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged.

  • Carbon Footprint: 1. The negative impact that something (such as a business or person) has on the environment; specifically: the amount of carbon emitted by something during a given period.

  • Organic: 1. (Definition 3) relating to, yielding, or involving the use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides.

  • Wind Turbine: A wind-driven turbine for generating electricity.

  • Recycle: 1. To pass again through a series of changes or treatments.  2. To adapt to a new use: alter.  3.  To bring back: reuse. 4. To make ready for reuse.

  • Compost:  A mixture that consists largely of decayed organic matter and is used for fertilizing and conditioning land.

  • Ecology:  A branch of science concerned with the interrelationship of organisms and their environments.

  • Biodegradable: Capable of being broken down especially into innocuous products by the action of living things.

  • Global Warming:  An increase in the earth’s atmospheric and oceanic temperatures widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from pollution.

  • Pollution: The action of polluting, especially by environmental contamination with man-made waste.
